Ex-Notre Dame center Matt Hegarty transfers to Oregon

A week after Everett Golson announced his decision to head to Florida State, Notre Dame's other outgoing graduate transfer found his next home.

Offensive lineman Matt Hegarty will play his final year of college football at Oregon, where he'll slide into a role on the interior of the Ducks' offensive line. Oregon has to replace center Hroniss Grasu and guard Hamani Stevens this fall.

As a graduate transfer, Hegarty will be immediately eligible to play in Eugene. The Aztec, N.M. native appeared in 34 games during his time at Notre Dame, starting twice at center in 2013 and in all 13 games in 2014 (three at guard, 10 at center).

Hegarty told ESPN.com in March his decision to transfer was due to his coaches telling him he'd be moved off center in 2015 and would have to compete for a starting spot at guard. After suffering a minor stroke in 2012, Hegarty wanted to play his final year of college football somewhere he wouldn't have to worry about losing playing time.

The departure of the 6-foot-4, 295 pound Hegarty opened the door for rising sophomores Quenton Nelson and Alex Bars to compete at left tackle, with returning captain Nick Martin moving back to center this fall.
