Notre Dame announced Sunday junior cornerback Nick Watkins will miss the remainder of spring practice after undergoing surgery for a fractured left humerus (arm) Saturday night.

Watkins suffered the injury during practice Saturday morning. Team surgeon Brian L. Ratigan, M.D., performed the procedure, and Watkins is expected to participate in workouts this summer.

Watkins will compete with Devin Butler, Shaun Crawford and Nick Coleman for a starting spot opposite Cole Luke at cornerback this year.

After Butler broke his foot in practice, the former four-star recruit from Dallas started the Fiesta Bowl and held his own against Ohio State after not playing many meaningful snaps during the regular season.

"We knew he was going to be a target,” coach Brian Kelly said after the Fiesta Bowl. “But here is what we asked him to do: They're going to throw it out there, make the tackle. He was holding on for dear life most of the time. I love the fact that he was out there and he was not afraid of the moment.”
