Notre Dame will play its first game against Toledo on Sept. 11, 2021 at Notre Dame Stadium, Toledo announced Monday.

"We are very pleased and excited to add Notre Dame to our 2021 football schedule," Toledo vice president and athletic director Mike O'Brien said. "Notre Dame has one of the greatest college football traditions in the country so it definitely will be a matchup our football team will be looking forward to. The game also has the added benefit of only being just a two-and-a-half hour drive from Toledo, so I know many of our fans will travel to South Bend for the contest."

Notre Dame's date with Toledo will come five days after the Irish travel to Tallahassee to open the 2021 season at Florida State on Labor Day. Notre Dame also opens the 2019 season on Labor Day at Louisville and will play New Mexico at home the following weekend.

Scheduling Toledo fits with Notre Dame's plan to face Group of Five schools in one-off home games like Rice (2014), UMass (2015), Nevada (2016), Miami Ohio (2017), Ball State (2018) and New Mexico (2019).
