Notre Dame No. 4 in latest College Football Playoff rankings

The College Football Playoff selection committee placed Notre Dame No. 4 in its latest rankings released Tuesday night.

Notre Dame has two wins over top-25 teams: No. 20 Navy and No. 22 Temple, plus victories against over-.500 teams in USC and Pitt. Selection committee chairman Jeff Long pointed to DeShone Kizer's play and Notre Dame's resiliency this season in why the Irish were ranked as a team that, right now, would be in the playoff.

"They’ve moved themselves up," Long said. "They’ve got a couple of top 25 wins now that we’ve had our rankings that have been impressive. Their quarterback has played great and they’ve been able to overcome some injuries on that team. So that speaks to the strength of that team, the overall team.

"They were solidly in at No. 4 with the committee this week."

Stanford moved up from No. 11 to No. 7, good news for the Irish with that season-ending date at Palo Alto two games away. Clemson remained at No. 1, where it opened in the rankings last week, with Alabama at No. 2, Ohio State No. 3, Iowa No. 5 and Baylor No. 6.

Undefeated Oklahoma State beat No. 15 TCU by 20 in Stillwater over the weekend -- the Cowboys' first win over team that currently has a winning record in 2015 -- and ranked No. 8 this week.

No. 6 Baylor faces No. 12 Oklahoma this weekend, while No. 2 Alabama travels to Starkville to face No. 17 Mississippi State this weekend.

“Given how many games remain, how many conferences still have their toughest competition ahead, combined with the results of games played to date, we will continue to see teams move up, or down, by quite a bit week to week," selection committee chairman and Arkansas A.D. Jeff Long said.
