31 Days to Kickoff: Minooka

31 Days to Kickoff: Minooka

CSNChicago.com preps reporter "Edgy" Tim O’Halloran spotlights 100 high school football teams in 100 days. The first 75 team profiles will focus on teams making strides across Chicagoland and elsewhere in the state. Starting Aug. 1, we’ll unveil the @CSNPreps Top 25 Power Rankings, leading up to kickoff on Friday, Aug. 26. You can view Edgy Tim's other football previews here.

School: Minooka

Head coach: Paul Forsythe

Assistant Coaches: Bert Kooi, Frank Yudzentis, Paige Schoolman, Matt Harding, Mic Resner

How they fared in 2015: 5-5 (3-4) Southwest Prairie Conference. Minooka made the 2015 Class 8A state playoff field and lost to Huntley in opening round action.

Biggest storyline in 2016: Can the Indians get back to the state playoffs and advance?

Names to watch this season: QB Johnny Carnagio, WR/DB Isaiah Hill

Biggest holes to fill: The Indians will need to replace their entire starting defensive line from a season ago.

EDGY's Early Take: With 13 starters back (8 offense 5 defense) from their 2015 state playoff team the Indians have high hopes this fall. The pass/catch combo of QB Carnagio to WR Hill is one of the tops in the conference. If Minooka can find a few answers up front on defense they could make a return state playoff push.

11 Days to Kickoff: Lake Zurich

11 Days to Kickoff: Lake Zurich

NBCSportsChicago.com preps reporter "Edgy" Tim O’Halloran spotlights 100 high school football teams in 100 days. The first 75 team profiles will focus on teams making strides across Chicagoland and elsewhere in the state. Biggest storyline: New head coach Ron Planz. Can the Bears make the adjustment to their new head coach and keep up their winning ways in 2019?

Names to watch this season: QB/DB Jack Moses (Sr.), LB Bryan Sanborn (Jr.), TE Hunter Welcing (Sr., Northwestern)

Biggest holes to fill: In the trenches. The Bears will need to reload on both the offensive and defensive lines.

EDGY's Early Take: The Bears have a new leader in former Elmhurst College head coach Ron Planz, who originally took the head coaching position at Larkin then took the job at Lake Zurich after Luke Mertens surprisingly stepped down late this spring. LZ welcomes back some key names from a season ago including senior QB Jack Moses, senior TE Hunter Welcing (Northwestern) along with Power Five recruit in junior LB Bryan Sanborn. The Bears schedule is certainly no gimme. Early nonconference tests against Fremd and Marist will great tests right out of the gate. Getting five straight home games to close the regular season is a big plus. This team is hungry to get back into the playoffs and make some noise later this fall.

Biggest storyline: The Hilltoppers have been one of the most dominant Illinois high school programs the last decade or so, but have only advanced to the second round the previous two years. Can the Hilltoppers get back to making deeper runs in the IHSA state playoffs?

Names to watch this season: OLB Greyson Metz (Sr.) and OL Andrew Johnson (Sr.)

Biggest holes to fill: The Hilltoppers have a few key spots to fill this summer including quarterback and on the defensive line.

EDGY's Early Take: Glenbard West head coach Chad Hetlet has produced a 129-21 during his time in Glen Ellyn, including two state titles (2012, 2015) and a runner-up appearance (2009). Nine of his 12 seasons have resulted in double-digit wins. Witnessing the Hilltoppers get knocked out of the state playoffs at home, 45-0 to Lincoln-Way East, has undoubtedly provided plenty of offseason motivation. The 2019 ‘Hitters’ will look towards an experience and talented defense to lead the way. They’re headlined by senior OLB Greyson Metz, who anchors a unit that showed terrific speed this summer. On offense, they will look to run the football behind a line led by senior OL Andrew Johnson. Look for senior returning starters RB Joey Richmond and FB Nic Seifert to get plenty of touches this season.
