49 Days to Kickoff: St. Charles East

NBCSportsChicago.com preps reporter "Edgy" Tim O’Halloran spotlights 100 high school football teams in 100 days. The first 75 team profiles will focus on teams making strides across Chicagoland and elsewhere in the state. Starting Aug. 5, we’ll unveil the @NBCSPrepsTop 25 Power Rankings, leading up to kickoff on Friday, Aug. 30.

School: St. Charles East

Head coach: Bryce Farquhar

Assistant coaches: Jon Kittl, Chuck Abate, Chris Goryl, Nick Edlund, Tim Wolf, Brian Teresinski, Greg Bess, Pat Schiller, Mike Budzinski, Nolan Possley, Jason Potter, Mark Orszula, Mike Fields, Jeff Kolker and Tim Brei

How they fared in 2018: 5-5 (3-4 DuKane Conference). St. Charles East made the Class 8A state playoff field and lost to Lincoln-Way East in opening round action.

2019 regular season schedule:

Aug. 30 vs Lemont Sept. 6 vs Carmel Sept. 13 @ Glenbard North Sept. 20 vs Wheaton South Sept. 27 @ Geneva Oct. 4 vs St. Charles North Oct. 11 @ Batavia Oct. 18 vs Wheaton North

Oct. 25 @ Lake Park

Biggest storyline: The DuKane is stacked. Can the Saints continue to win in a conference that looks even tougher, top to bottom, than last season?

Names to watch this season: OL Dylan Barrett (senior, committed to Wisconsin) and QB BJ Crossen (senior)

Biggest holes to fill: The Saints welcome back a nice core of 12 returning starters this  fall (six offense, six defense); however, do they have the overall numbers and depth on hand to make a winning run in the conference. Will it affect their path to a playoff berth?

EDGY's Early Take: St Charles East has also made an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons under head coach Bryce Farquhar. The Saints feature an effective power running game, led by OL Dylan Barrett, a Wisconsin verbal commit. It’s an experienced group overall up front. QB BJ Crossen is an experienced quarterback and is a threat with the run and the pass. If the Saints can get out of the gate early (three of their first four are at home), all the better for their playoff chances come October.

Preps Basketball Power Rankings: No. 9 Notre Dame

Preps Basketball Power Rankings: No. 9 Notre Dame

School: Notre Dame

2018-19 record: 19-12 (6-3 East Suburban Catholic Conference)

Postseason results: Lost to Evanston in Class 4A regional finals.

Players to watch: The junior class is stellar for the Dons. Guard Anthony Sayles is a Division I prospect who also excels on the football field. Forward Troy D'Amico is a mid-major prospect who can score at a high level. And Evanston transfer Louis Lemond could be one of the area's breakout players this season with a bigger role and multiple high-major scholarship offers.

Why they're in the power rankings: Notre Dame looked like they immediately clicked this summer once Lesmond entered the lineup. The Dons already had talent and size last season thanks to D'Amico and senior forward Jason Bergstrom. Now with an added year of experience, and the addition of Lesmond, the Dons have massive expectations. Although most of Notre Dame's core is juniors, they're talented enough to compete for a state title this season.

Did you know? Notre Dame's program has done a great job of capturing regional titles (17). The program has struggled to make longer runs in the IHSA playoffs, however, as the Dons only have two sectional titles in school history.
