Morgan Park senior point guard Charlie Moore was named Mr. Basketball in Illinois on Tuesday.
The 5-foot-10 Moore was the driving force behind a talented Morgan Park team this season as the Mustangs finished 26-4 and were ranked No. 1 in the area for much of the season. A varsity player since his freshman year, Moore helped Morgan Park make three trips to Peoria while winning two Class 3A state titles.
Committed to Memphis for next season, Moore averaged 28 points, seven assists and five steals per game during his senior season. The MVP of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, Moore was one of the best perimeter shooters the state has seen in recent years.
Fenwick senior point guard Mike Smith finished second place in the voting, while Simeon senior guard Zach Norvell finished third. Belleville Althoff junior Jordan Goodwin was the fourth-place finisher after helping the Crusaders to a Class 3A state title while Hinsdale South senior center Barret Benson placed fifth. The award is decided after a vote by coaches and media from all over the state.
With Moore winning Mr. Basketball, the Chicago Public League has now produced four of the last five award winners as he joins Jahlil Okafor and Jabari Parker (a two-time winner) as recent winners from Chicago.
