Preps Basketball Power Rankings: Bloom stays No. 1 as rankings see lots of movement

Share

Lots of movement in the NBC Sports Chicago Preps Basketball Power Rankings this week.

Although Bloom stays at No. 1 despite a loss to Thornton, the rest of the top five saw some major shakeups with losses to plenty to top-12 teams. The rankings don't see many matchups this week ahead of holiday tournament time, but here's a look at where things stand heading into a new week.

1. Bloom (8-1, 2-1) (1) -- The Blazing Trojans stay at No. 1 despite the road loss at Thornton. Bloom is missing senior guard Donovan Newby and hasn't played at full strength all season. Yet, you could argue Bloom has looked like the best team with the strongest early profile.
2. Curie (5-0, 2-0) (5) -- The Condors were very impressive in blowing out Hillcrest at the Team Rose Shootout. Ramean Hinton is a go-to presence on offense and he has loads of help around him. The guard play of Nick Owens and Elijah Pickens is solid on both ends and senior Josiah Hammons emerged as a shooter.
3. Evanston (8-0, 2-0) (7) -- Big week for the Wildkits with wins over rival New Trier and Orr. The Wildkits have a strong profile so far with early wins over Notre Dame and Orr to their credit.
4. Bogan (9-1, 4-0) (4) -- The Bengals earned a blowout win over Simeon as they've now knocked off both the Wolverines and Mustangs in conference play. The loss to Notre Dame keeps Bogan in the same spot.
5. Morgan Park (4-2, 1-1) (3) -- The Mustangs were winners in league play over Kenwood before going downstate and falling to Collinsville in a close matchup. Morgan Park has a light week before the holidays begin.
6. Whitney Young (4-2, 4-0) (5) -- Impressive start to conference play for the Dolphins with a road win at Lincoln Park and another win over Payton. Whitney Young's loaded backcourt and strong play from Sangolay Njie in the frontcourt make them a major contender.
7. Loyola (8-0, 3-0) (10) -- One of the area's top defenses remained that way in a tight win over Notre Dame during the week. The Ramblers also are tied atop the Catholic League Blue with an unbeaten record. Loyola has three games this week, including a matchup with St. Patrick.
8. Notre Dame (8-2, 1-0) (13) -- A busy week for the Dons as they went 2-1 against top 11 opponents with wins over Bogan and Marian Catholic and a loss to Loyola. Notre Dame is trying to figure things out without point guard Anthony Sayles as they seem to be doing fine.
9. Simeon (2-2, 1-1) (8) -- Simeon dropped a conference matchup with Bogan before bouncing back with a notable double-digit win over St. Rita at the Team Rose Shootout.
10. Thornton (7-0, 4-0) (14) -- Massive win for the Wildcats over Bloom in Southland play as they have control of the conference for now. Thornton will host Proviso East and Ferndale (MI) during the week.
11. Marian Catholic (5-2, 1-1) (9) -- The Spartans fell to Notre Dame in league play as they now have two top-ten losses on the season. Marian Catholic faces St. Rita and Tinley Park during the week.
12. Lincoln Park (8-2, 3-1) (11) -- Lincoln Park continues to look like one of the Public League's best teams. The Lions knocked off Orr before falling to Whitney Young at home. Lincoln Park gets two non-conference games this week.
13. Lake Park (8-0, 2-0) (12) -- Surviving a close win over Wheaton North, the Lancers are still undefeated. Lake Park gets a shot at Mundelein on the road this week.
14. DePaul Prep (7-1, 4-0) (15) -- The Rams stayed hot with wins over Mount Carmel and Providence during the week. DePaul Prep junior guard Ty Johnson is starting to get some buzz for his play.
15. Homewood-Flossmoor (6-1, 0-0) (16) -- Impressive blowout win for the Vikings over Lincoln-Way Central. It should be a fun one when H-F hosts Simeon in a non-conference game this Friday.
16. Stevenson (7-1, 2-0) (6) -- The Patriots lost their first game of the season to OPRF as they went cold after a hot start. Stevenson gets two matchups this week to fix things before the Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic.
17. Bolingbrook (6-2, 0-0) (18) -- Splitting two games in Iowa against top-five teams there, the Raiders were a solid 3-1 during the week. Kai Evans and Darius Burford remain a top-flight tandem.
18. Orr (4-3, 2-1) (17) -- Up and down week for the Spartans with losses to Lincoln Park and Evanston. But, perhaps most importantly, Orr won in double overtime downstate against Pinckneyville in a major Class 2A showdown.
19. Glenbrook South (8-0, 2-0) (19) -- Glenbrook South earned two wins during the week by double digits as they continue an undefeated start. The Titans have a road game at rival Glenbrook North during the week.
20. Mundelein (8-0, 2-0) (20) -- North Suburban competition was easy for the Mustangs this week with two double-digit wins. Mundelein has a tougher schedule this week with matchups against Zion-Benton and No. 13 Lake Park.
21. Fenwick (8-1, 4-0) (21) -- Nice 3-0 week for the Friars as they stayed unbeaten in Catholic League play. Fenwick will have a good matchup at St. Rita this week that should be considerably tougher.
22. Niles North (8-1, 2-0) (23) -- The Vikings received a scare with an OT win over Maine West last week. Niles North will host Vernon Hills in Central Suburban North play this week.
23. St. Charles North (8-1, 2-0) (24) -- St. Charles North escaped with a win over Geneva to stay in the Power Rankings. Another major test looms for the North Stars with a road game at St. Charles East this week.
24. Hinsdale South (7-0, 2-0) (25) -- The West Suburban's only unbeaten team, the Hornets had a solid win over Willowbrook. Hinsdale South has a chance to get another conference win at Downers South this week.
25. North Lawndale (8-1, 4-0) (NR) -- North Lawndale has started 4-0 in the Public League Red North/West and their only loss is to No. 20 Mundelein. The Phoenix get a big matchup with Curie this week to prove if they're for real.
