Recruiting News and Notes: Sam Brodner set to visit Illinois

Sam Brodner (RB), Glenbard West

The Illinois Player of the Year in 2015 has set two official visits, and a third could be on the way.

"I'm set to visit Syracuse and Illinois so far," Brodner said. "Wisconsin also offered me an official visit and I'm looking at setting up a visit with them towards the end of the month."

Brodner (5-foot-11, 215 pounds) will visit Syracuse on Jan. 15 and Illinois the following weekend (Jan. 22).

Steven Wirtel (LS), Mount Carmel

Wirtel (6-foot-4, 207 pounds) added a holiday offer from Iowa State. Wirtel, who is one of the top long-snappers in the Midwest, is also planning to take three upcoming official visits.

"I added a full scholarship offer not too long ago from Iowa State," Wirtel said. "They also offered me an official visit and I'm going to visit Iowa State (Jan. 15), along with Illinois (Jan. 22) and Georgia (Jan. 29)."

Wirtel is expected to make his college choice after his visit to Georgia.

US Army All-American Bowl

The annual US Army All American Bowl will take place Saturday, Jan. 9 in San Antonio, TX. The state of Illinois will be represented by Loyola Academy long-snapper John Shannon (Notre Dame), along with the state's top ranked recruit in the Class of 2016 in Hinsdale South defensive end Josh King (Michigan State).

King has been one of the most impressive players in practice for the West squad this week, according to Rivals.com's Midwest Recruiting Expert Josh Helmholdt.

"Josh is in a setting here going against some of the best players in the nation and so far this week he's been one of the most physically impressive kids," Helmholdt stated. "It looks like Josh is starting to gain more weight and he also has great speed and quickness coming off the edge."

St. Charles North

North Stars head coach Rob Pomazak welcomes back several starters in 2016, along with a handful of potential DI level recruits. So far junior tight end Griffin Hammer (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) and junior offensive tackle Isaac Hawn (6-foot-6, 270 pounds) have already added DI scholarship offers, while junior offensive/defensive lineman Sam Ambrogio (6-foot-5, 290 pounds) is another name to watch.

Hammer, who is also a standout on the North Stars basketball team, and Hawn both have scholarship offers from Miami (OH) and Western Michigan. Hawn's first offer came from Illinois State.
