Scott Phillips' Top 25 Preps Power Rankings
25. Downers Grove North (5-0) (NR)
Entering the CSN Preps Power Rankings this week is Downers North as they knocked off Lyons to move to 5-0. Sure to be a factor in the West Suburban Silver this season, Downers North will play Glenbard West and Glenbard South this week.
24. Thornton (3-2) (NR)
Thornton was able to figure things out this week as they earned wins over Lockport and Proviso East after a 2-2 opening week. Senior Alonzo Verge had 28 points in the win over Proviso East as he's putting up big scoring numbers. Thornton has an important road game at Lincoln-Way West this Friday.
23. De La Salle (5-0) (NR)
Joining the CSN Preps Power Rankings is De La Salle after they knocked off previously-ranked St. Joseph at home. With wins over the Chargers and St. Pats, the Meteors are looking like a potential sleeper in what should be a fun race in the Catholic North.
22. Marist (4-0) (25)
Marist enjoyed a week off as they'll play two games in the East Suburban Catholic this week. The RedHawks open conference play with Carmel and St. Laurence. It's hard to gauge how good this team is going to be until they get tested in the deep ESCC.
21. Oak Park-River Forest (4-1) (22)
The Huskies lost a tough one to local rival No. 10 Fenwick at the Chicago Elite Classic, but they look like they'll be a potential Power Rankings team all through this season. OPRF will play Lyons and Brother Rice this week in two games that should be solid tests.
20. Marian Catholic (3-2) (17)
Marian Catholic took a tough 30-point loss to Iowa City West on the road last week as they didn't come prepared to play against one of the best teams in Iowa. The Spartans will try to bounce back with an ESCC road game at St. Viator this week.
19. Bloom (4-1,1-0) (23)
Bloom earned a 30-point win over Rich Central during the week as they continue to play like one of the South suburbs' best teams. The Blazing Trojans get a home game against Rich East this week in Southland play.
18. Jacobs (5-0, 1-0) (21)
The Golden Eagles moved to 5-0 as they rolled past Huntley for an easy Fox Valley win. Jacobs won't be tested very much in conference play this season so it's going to be tough to gauge how good they can be until we get to holiday tournaments. Jacobs will play Crystal Lake Central and Hampshire this week.
17. Orr (1-0) (20)
Quality season-opening win for Orr at the Chicago Elite Classic as they beat a very good Miller Grove team from Georgia. With a lot of talented juniors, the Spartans are going to be a force in the Red-West this season as Raekwon Drake and Tyron Mosley make for a solid combination.
16. Benet (5-0) (16)
Benet continues to roll early in the season as they beat DePaul Prep for a solid road win. The Redwings get a big test on the road in the ESCC this week as they travel to Notre Dame to face the unbeaten No. 15 Dons.
15. Notre Dame (6-0) (15)
The Dons are still unbeaten after surviving an overtime scare from Loyola Academy and running past Bartlett. Senior Jeameril Wilson continues to be one of the area's best two-way players and the Dons have more size than most teams in the area. Notre Dame has a busy week as they host No. 16 Benet in an ESCC showdown before they play Hinsdale Central.
14. Conant (5-1,1-0) (14)
The top team in the Mid-Suburban League looked like it with an easy road win over Schaumburg as senior guard Jimmy Sotos was feeling it from deep. The Cougars have two interesting tests during the week as they play a Hersey team coming off a big overtime win over Prospect before matching up with 5-0 Fremd.
13. Homewood-Flossmoor (5-0) (13)
The Vikings put together a blowout win over Thornridge during the week as they've looked like one of the strongest teams in the area the first few weeks. Conference play in the SouthWest Suburban begins this week for Homewood-Flossmoor as they'll face Lincoln-Way East.
12. Stevenson (5-0, 1-0) (12)
The Patriots opened North Suburban Lake play with a win over Zion-Benton as senior Justin Smith put up 30 points. Stevenson gets two more conference games during the week as they travel to Mundelein and host Lake Forest.
11. North Lawndale (4-1) (9)
The Phoenix dropped one to No. 5 Joliet West in the Chicago Elite Classic but they still look like a consistent top-25 team for this season. Senior Carlos Hines is a top talent in the city while Martrell Barnes continues to play very well to start the season. With size, athleticism and two stud scorers, North Lawndale will be tough. The Phoenix play Westinghouse and Marshall this week.
10. Fenwick (5-0) (11)
Fenwick was able to survive its rivalry game against No. 21 Oak Park-River Forest with a win as seniors Jamal Nixon and Jacob Keller both had great games. The Friars have two Catholic North games this week when they face St. Francis and go on the road to St. Ignatius.
9. Uplift (4-1) (7)
Uplift dropped its first game of the season, but it came against a talented out-of-state opponent in Chaminade (Mo.). The heavy favorites to win the Red-North, Uplift opens conference play with games against Lane and Von Steuben this week.
8. Whitney Young (0-1) (4)
Whitney Young slipped up against Kenwood in its opener but they'll still be a contender in the Red-West this year. The Dolphins had a big outing from senior Lucas Williamson in the Kenwood loss and junior Justin Boyd was also solid. If the Dolphins get more from their guards, they could be elite. Whitney Young gets No. 17 Orr and Farragut this week.
7. Kenwood (4-1) (10)
Important win for Kenwood over No. 8 Whitney Young at the Chicago Elite Classic as senior Manny Patterson continues to show why he's one of the best big men in the state. If senior Octavius Parker can keep hitting perimeter shots, the Broncos will be a major factor for a city and state title. Kenwood opens Red-Central conference play with games against Hyde Park and Dunbar this week.
6. Bolingbrook (4-0) (8)
Bolingbrook nearly reached 100 points in a blowout win over Lincoln-Way Central as they're been impressive early in the season. The Raiders will get Lockport at home in a Southwest Suburban Red contest this week.
5. Joliet West (6-0, 1-0) (6)
One of the biggest wins of the early season came when Joliet West ran past No. 11 North Lawndale in the Chicago Elite Classic. The Tigers are very balanced and senior Teyvion Kirk has elevated his play to another level so far this season. Joliet West will take on Plainfield East in Southwest Prairie play this week.
4. Evanston (6-1, 1-0) (3)
The Wildkits earned a solid win over Niles North in CSL play before losing by double digits to nationally-ranked Montverde Academy. The loss to Montverde shouldn't be too concerning for Evanston since they won't play another team that good in Illinois. Evanston will try to bounce back against Niles West this week.
3. Simeon (1-0) (5)
Really impressive season-opening win for Simeon over Gonzaga (D.C.) as the Wolverines beat a nationally-ranked opponent by double-digits. Junior forward Talen Horton-Tucker looked like a potential breakout star this season with his monster double-double while Kezo Brown and Evan Gilyard also played well. Simeon opens Red-South play against Harlan and Brooks this week.
2. Morgan Park (1-0) (2)
Nick Irvin's team was off during the week but they have a huge week ahead with three games. Morgan Park will travel to Michigan on Monday to face King High School before Red-South road games at Bogan and Brooks during the week.
1. Curie (4-0) (1)
The Condors made a major statement this week with three wins. Curie won at home over Butler Prep but followed that up with two impressive wins over East St. Louis and Belleville Althoff at big showcase events. Beating two of the best downstate teams should give the Condors a lot of confidence heading into conference play.
