Scott Phillips' Top 25 Preps Power Rankings
With the playoffs in full swing, the rankings saw a lot of new teams enter the picture this week.
25. Waukegan (20-8, 10-4) (NR)
The talented Bulldogs scored an impressive regional title victory over conference rival Stevenson as Waukegan now moves on to its own gym for sectional play. Notre Dame is the sectional semifinal opponent for the Bulldogs as they play at the Dog Pound on Wednesday night. If Waukegan moves on they could face Evanston or Loyola for sectional hardware.
24. Wheaton North (23-6, 12-4) (NR)
Entering the Power Rankings for the first time all season is Wheaton North as they took down last year's Class 4A runner-up Benet to claim a regional title. The Falcons now move on to Hinsdale Central as they'll face Hinsdale South on Wednesday before potentially playing Wheaton-Warrenville South or Naperville North for a sectional title on Friday.
23. Loyola Academy (22-8, 7-2) (NR)
The Ramblers are back in the Power Rankings after capturing a Class 4A regional title with wins over Highland Park and New Trier. Loyola now gets a shot at Evanston in the Waukegan Sectional semifinals on Tuesday before a potential game against Notre Dame or the host Bulldogs.
22. Joliet Central (23-5, 11-3) (NR)
The Steelmen took down Oswego and Lincoln-Way East to set up a rivalry rematch against Joliet West. The Lincoln-Way East Sectional is very tough in Class 4A as Joliet Central could face Bolingbrook or West Aurora for a sectional title.
21. Brother Rice (25-5, 7-0) (21)
The Crusaders beat Oak Lawn and Homewood-Flossmoor for a Class 4A regional title as Brother Rice now has to slow down Alonzo Verge and Thornton in the sectional semifinals Wednesday at Thornwood. If Brother Rice wins they could get Simeon or another chance to face Marist, a team the Crusaders beat earlier this season.
20. Marist (27-3, 8-1) (25)
Marist scored perhaps the most impressive regional final win of anyone with its blowout of previously-ranked T.F. North as the ESCC champions are playing with a ton of confidence. The Redhawks now get to face Simeon in the Thornwood sectional semifinal on Tuesday and could face Thornton or Brother Rice for a sectional title on Friday if they advance.
19. Naperville North (23-5, 13-3) (20)
Naperville North had blowout wins over Metea Valley and Addison Trail to claim a Class 4A regional title. The Huskies will get another chance to face Wheaton-Warrenville South on Tuesday at the Hinsdale Central Sectional semifinals and they could play Wheaton North or Hinsdale South for a sectional title if they advance.
18. Oak Park-River Forest (23-6, 11-1) (22)
Solid win for the Huskies over St. Patrick as they continue to play good ball down the stretch. Oak Park-River Forest now has to face defending Class 4A champion Curie on Tuesday and might face Whitney Young or Kenwood on Friday for the sectional title if they advance.
17. Jacobs (28-1, 15-1) (20)
The Golden Eagles rolled past Streamwood and St. Charles North as they won their Class 4A regional title at home. Jacobs now faces Hononegah in the Class 4A sectional semifinals at Elgin on Wednesday before possibly facing Rockford Boylan or Larkin for a sectional title.
16. Notre Dame (25-5, 7-2) (19)
The Dons are heading to the Class 4A Waukegan Sectional after beating Glenbrook North and using a crazy run to come back and beat Niles North. Notre Dame now faces Waukegan at the Dog Pound on Wednesday in the sectional semifinals. Evanston and Loyola Academy are on the other side of the sectional if the Dons advance.
15. Thornton (22-5, 12-0) (18)
Alonzo Verge was incredibly impressive for the Wildcats as they avenged an earlier loss to Bloom for a Class 4A regional title. Thornton will face Brother Rice in the sectional semifinals on Wednesday at Thornwood before possibly facing Simeon or Marist after that for a sectional title on Friday.
14. Kenwood (21-7, 8-2) (16)
Kenwood picked up big wins over Leyden and Proviso West as they captured a regional title in Class 4A. The Broncos now get another chance to beat Whitney Young after doing so earlier this season as the rematch comes Wednesday at Proviso East. If Kenwood wins again they could face Red-Central rival Curie or Oak Park-River Forest.
13. North Lawndale (22-7, 7-3) (15)
North Lawndale is off to a solid start in Class 3A with huge wins over Urban Prep/West and Phillips. The Phoenix will get tested more in the Fenwick Sectional as they take on Red-West rival Farragut on Wednesday before potentially facing Fenwick or Westinghouse for the sectional title.
12. Conant (26-4, 8-2) (12)
The Cougars handled Palatine and McHenry to win a regional title as they face Lake Park on Wednesday in the Robert Morris University Sectional. If Conant wins then they could get another shot at Fremd or face Grant for a sectional title.
11. Orr (20-5, 8-2) (11)
Orr continues to pile up wins as they are one away from making Peoria in Class 2A. The Spartans took down IC Catholic and DePaul Prep by double-digits to earn a sectional title as they now face White-West champion Collins in the Joliet Central Supersectional on Tuesday.
10. Fenwick (26-4, 9-0) (10)
The Friars earned easy wins over DRW Trading and UIC Prep last week as they move on to their own gym for sectional play in Class 3A. Fenwick has to beat two Red-West opponents to win the sectional. First up, the Friars battle Westinghouse on Tuesday before a possible sectional title game against Farragut or North Lawndale.
9. Wheaton-Warrenville South (29-1, 16-0) (9)
It took a huge late play for the Tigers to get past Hinsdale Central as Wheaton-Warrenville South escaped with a regional title win. The Tigers now face Naperville North again in the sectional semifinals at Hinsdale Central and they could face Hinsdale South or Wheaton North for a sectional title on Friday.
8. Fremd (28-0, 10-0) (8)
The Vikings are still unbeaten as they beat Schaumburg and Hersey by double-digits to in Class 4A. Fremd will face Grant in the sectional semifinals at Robert Morris University on Tuesday before possibly playing Lake Park or conference rival Conant on Friday.
7. Joliet West (25-3, 14-0) (7)
Great start for the Tigers in the Class 4A as they crushed Lincoln-Way Central and Romeoville to get a regional title. Wednesday means a rematch with crosstown rival Joliet Central as that comes in a sectional semifinal at Lincoln-Way East. If the Tigers advance they could face West Aurora or get a chance to face Bolingbrook.
6. Whitney Young (22-7, 8-2) (6)
The Dolphins took down Riverside-Brookfield and Lincoln Park to win a Class 4A regional. Whitney Young now gets a rematch with Kenwood in the Proviso East sectional semifinals, and if the Dolphins advance, they could get Curie or Oak Park-River Forest on Friday.
5. Bolingbrook (26-1, 9-1) (5)
The Raiders were tested by Lemont but ultimately pulled out the victory to claim a Class 4A regional title. Bolingbrook will face West Aurora in the Lincoln-Way East Sectional semifinals on Tuesday and could face the winner of the Joliet West/Joliet Central showdown on Friday for a sectional title.
4. Curie (25-3, 10-0) (4)
The defending Class 4A champions rolled past Jones and Proviso East to claim another regional title as they move on to the Proviso East Sectional. The Condors will play Oak Park-River Forest on Tuesday and could face either Kenwood or Whitney Young for a sectional title on Friday.
3. Morgan Park (21-6, 9-1) (3)
The Mustangs made quick work of Evergreen Park and Butler Prep in the first two games as they advanced to the Class 3A St. Rita Sectional. Morgan Park first gets a shot at Brooks and then could face Red-South rival Bogan or St. Rita for the sectional title.
2. Evanston (26-3, 10-0) (2)
Two big wins for the Wildkits as they rolled past Niles West and Deerfield. Things get tougher this week in the Class 4A Waukegan Sectional as they take on Loyola Academy on Tuesday, and if they advance, Waukegan or Notre Dame on Friday.
1. Simeon (26-3, 8-2) (1)
The Wolverines took down Shepard and Marian Catholic by double digits to advance to the Class 4A Thornwood Sectional semifinals. Simeon beating the Spartans without junior guard Kezo Brown (flu) shows how deep this team is. This week the Wolverines take on Marist on Tuesday and potentially play Thornton or Brother Rice for the sectional title at Thornwood.
