2020 Tokyo Olympics: How to watch U.S. Olympic trials

Share

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are still just over a month away, but the action is starting to heat up.

Over the next few days, trails will be held to determine the Americans who will represent the country during the Olympics. Trials for swimming, gymnastics and track and field are all set to begin in the coming days.

Here’s a look at how you can watch the U.S. Olympic trials for swimming, gymnastics and track and field:

How can I watch the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials?

The U.S. Olympic swimming team will be determined based on a series of trial races taking place in Omaha from June 13-20. USA swimming has been impressive in recent years with stars Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel.

The top two finishers in each individual event in Omaha, as well as likely the top six in the 100, and 200m freestyles for relay races, will be in line to make the Olympic swimming roster.

Ledecky and Manuel will headline the women’s side, as they could qualify for the team in six and five events, respectively. No American woman has won more than five gold medals in a single Olympics.

Caeleb Dressel could qualify for seven Olympic events on the men’s side, one behind the eight that Phelps raced at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Lochte is also hoping to return for his fourth Olympics at 36 years old, which would make him the oldest male U.S. Olympic swimmer in history. Here’s the schedule for the upcoming trials:

How can I watch the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials?

The U.S. Olympic gymnastics teams will be decided after trials in St. Louis from June 24-27.

For the women’s competition, the top two athletes in the all-around combining scores from both trial days will automatically make the team. A selection committee will then fill out the rest of the lineup, which is likely to be made up of six athletes total (four gymnasts will qualify for the team, along with two more women who act as individuals). Jade Carey clinched one of the individual spots last year, but will still be competing in the upcoming trials for a team spot.

Superstar Simone Biles will be looking for the chance to attend the Tokyo Games, where she would have the opportunity to become the first woman to repeat as Olympic all-around champion since 1968. Biles won’t be joined by 2016 Rio Olympics teammate, Laurie Hernandez, who withdrew from nationals after one event because she hyperextended her knee in warm-ups.

The men’s team will also be determined in St. Louis. Two-time NCAA all-around champ from Stanford, Brody Malone, won his first U.S. men’s gymnastics title earlier this month and is set to compete at the upcoming trials. Sam Mikulak, a two-time Olympian, will look to redeem himself after finishing third with a subpar performance at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

Here’s the schedule for the men’s and women’s gymnastics trials:

June 25

Women day 1: 8 p.m. ET on NBC

How can I watch the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials?

The U.S. Olympic track and field hopefuls will compete at a series of qualifying events in Eugene, Oreg. from June 18-27.

Recent American track standouts Kerron Clement, the 2016 Rio Olympic 400m hurdles gold medalist, and Nia Ali, the reigning world 100m hurdles champion, did not sign up for the trials and thus will not compete in Tokyo.

Allyson Felix, a six-time Olympic gold medallist, is eligible for 2021 Olympic qualification in the 200m and 400m. Men’s sprinter Trayvon Bromell ran a 9.77s 100m dash before the upcoming trials and hopes to be crowned the fastest man in the world in Tokyo with Jamaican Usain Bolt not competing.
