White Sox Minor League Report: Blake Hickman delivers strong performance in debut

As part of a weekly series, presented by Ozinga, CSNChicago.com will highlight the top performances of several prospects in a weekly minor league report.

White Sox Blueprint Player of the Week: Blake Hickman (SP), Kannapolis Intimidators

It's been a long road to recovery for the White Sox 2015 draft pick.

Hickman, a Chicago native who graduated from Simeon Career Academy and was part of the White Sox ACE youth program, made his professional debut last week after missing nearly two years with Tommy John Surgery.

In his first career minor-league start, the 6-foot-5 right-hander allowed just one run on five hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work against the Hickory Crawdads.

Hickman followed up that performance on Wednesday, surrendering just four hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

The 23-year-old Hickman will be back on the mound next week against the Hagerstown Suns.

Charlotte Knights

After a rocky outing following his first career professional no-hitter, Lucas Giolito dominated an impressive Durham Bulls lineup.

Giolito allowed just one run on five hits and compiled 11 strikeouts in six innings.

Since getting outrighted to Charlotte, Cody Asche has found his groove in the minor leagues. Asche has .355 average with three home runs and 12 RBI in his last 10 games.

Birmingham Barons

Former 15th round draft selection Jordan Guerrero has turned the corner after a shaky first two months of the season.

Since the calendar turned to June, Guerrero has stymied opposing hitters to the tune of just three earned runs and 10 strikeouts in his last two starts.

Winston-Salem Dash

The White Sox may have found a hidden gem from the 2015 draft in shortstop Danny Mendick.

While he's a bit old for Single-A, the 23-year-old Mendick has been scorching at the plate over the last two weeks.

Over his last 10 games, Mendick has 15 hits to go along with two homers and six RBI. The New York-native has also added three stolen bases during that span.

DSL White Sox

The Dominican Summer League kicked off on June 3, and while many White Sox fans are anxiously awaiting the debut of Cuban outfielder Luis Robert, there are a few other players to keep an eye on.

Josue Guerrero, the nephew of future MLB Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, made his debut after signing a $1.1 million deal with the club last June.

It's been a slow start for Guerrero as he's slashing just .190/.292/.286, but he's second on the team with four RBI and has two doubles in his first five games.

White Sox call up minor-league pitcher, place Geovany Soto on 60-day disabled list

White Sox call up minor-league pitcher, place Geovany Soto on 60-day disabled list

The White Sox called up right-handed pitcher Gregory Infante Monday afternoon.

Infante takes the place of Cody Asche, who was sent down to Triple-A Charlotte Sunday evening.

In order to make room for Infante on the 40-man roster, the Sox moved Geovany Soto to the 60-day disabled list.

Soto has been dealing with an elbow injury and had surgery on Tuesday. His recovery will take at least 12 weeks, so Soto would never have been back within a 60-day timetable anyways.

"He's fine. Obviously nobody ever wants to go down, especially the catcher who has been doing a really nice job for us," manager Rick Renteria said ahead of Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels. "He's been having a lot of fun and has been enjoying the opportunity here, but I think he wants to resolve the pain that he has in his elbow because it's been very significant. He opted to have that cleaned up a little bit."

Infante, 29, last pitched in the big leagues in 2010 with the White Sox. He did not allow a run in five games (4.2 innings).

Since that 2010 cup of coffee, Infante has bounced around the minor leagues, playing in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies systems before returning to the White Sox this season.

Infante is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 13 innings with Charlotte, striking out 16 batters and allowing just seven hits.

The 26-year-old Asche was hitting just .105 at the plate prior to his demotion, going 6-for-57 over the span of 19 games.

White Sox option Cody Asche to Triple-A, addition of pitcher — not Yoan Moncada — coming Monday

White Sox option Cody Asche to Triple-A, addition of pitcher — not Yoan Moncada — coming Monday

The White Sox made a roster move after Sunday afternoon's 9-3 win over the San Diego Padres, optioning infielder Cody Asche to Triple-A Charlotte.

A corresponding roster move will be made before Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

To prevent speculation that the organization's top prospect, Yoan Moncada, could soon make his debut with the team, the White Sox said that the player added to the active roster will be a pitcher. Likely, that will mean an addition to the bullpen.

Asche has not had a good start to the 2017 campaign, his first with the White Sox. In 19 games, he posted a gruesome .105/.177/.175 slash line with 21 strikeouts in 62 plate appearances.
