Notre Dame CB Shaun Crawford out for the season with reported torn Achilles'

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame redshirt freshman cornerback Shaun Crawford suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in the first quarter of Saturday's game against Nevada, according to NBC's Kathryn Tappen.

While Brian Kelly didn't confirm the specifics of Crawford's injury after the game, the seventh-year Irish coach did confirm that Crawford will miss the remainder of the season.

Crawford suffered the injury after breaking up a deep ball over the middle on Nevada's first drive. He wasn't able to put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field by trainers, and was seen with a boot on his left leg as he moved on crutches into the Notre Dame locker room later in the first quarter.

The former four-star recruit recorded his first career interception against Texas and returned Jarron Jones' blocked PAT for what was a game-tying two-point score int aht 50-47 loss Sept. 4.

Crawford tore his right ACL during preseason camp last year and missed the entire 2015 season.

"This is like deja vu for him, really," senior cornerback Cole Luke said. "He’s got a bunch of guys coming up to him saying you’re going to be okay, but he’s a tough guy. He knows he’s going to be okay, but it’s going to be rough. It’s not going to be easy getting back from this. But if anybody can do it, he can."

Notre Dame turned to sophomore Nick Coleman -- who was burned a few times against Texas and fell down on a pass Saturday that set up a Nevada field goal, the Wolf Pack's only points against the Irish first-team defense -- in Crawford's absence. Freshman Julian Love will be relied on to fill in for Crawford as Notre Dame's primary nickel corner, and fellow freshman Donte Vaughn made his college debut during second half garbage time Saturday.

Junior cornerback Nick Watkins remains sidelined with an arm injury. Kelly said on Aug. 30 Watkins will undergo an X-Ray on his arm in two weeks, which if that timetable still stands would be this this coming week. Kelly hasn't given a rough idea of when Watkins could be able to return to the field, though with Crawford out Notre Dame may need him as soon as he's healthy.
