Cleveland shrinks White Sox' magic number, both teams lose

DETROIT – The White Sox didn’t help themselves on Monday in their quest to clinch a playoff berth, but Cleveland gave them a hand.

The White Sox’s magic number shrunk to two on Monday, as Cleveland dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Royals. The White Sox can clinch as soon as Tuesday, if they beat the Tigers and Cleveland loses a third straight game to Kansas City.

"At this point, we're exactly where we've been all year, we're taking care of ourselves,” White Sox manager Tony La Russa said after a 4-3 loss at Detroit on Monday. “We haven't been consistent. And it's not like it's not relevant, because when (Cleveland) gets beat, the number goes down. But the priority is: What are we doing, and how can we get more consistent? And that's where the focus is."

The White Sox’ game at Detroit on Tuesday has been moved up to 12:10 CT, due to a forecast of inclement weather later. Cleveland plays five hours later. So, if the White Sox do win on Tuesday, they will have to wait until the evening to find out if they’re officially postseason bound.
