People around Chicago are stepping up to help their neighbors during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

And some of those good works have not gone unnoticed by a rising star on the South Side.

Eloy Jiménez surprised workers at the Novias Davila bridal shop in Little Village, who are working to create face masks for their community, with a donation of team uniforms and funds to support their efforts.

"I'm Latin. So for me, to help other Latins is good, especially when they come from a poor neighborhood or they don't have the help. For me, it is really good," Jiménez said in a video message. "I like to help people, so that's why I decided to help them.

"They put in the effort, and they try to do good things, so I really appreciate that and I really respect that. That's why I decided to give them a gift and donate some money because they put in the effort. To me, that's a really good thing, and I respect that."

Jiménez sent a surprise video message to shop owner Tania Hernández and her team Friday, thanking them for their work and revealing a donation of a $500 grocery gift card for every worker. Each worker received $1,000 total: $500 for their service to create face masks and a $500 gift card to Jewel-Osco.

Jiménez asked that the face masks made from his contributions be donated to first responders in Little Village. As of May 6, Little Village had the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 of any single zip code in the state.
