Nomar Mazara signs with Tigers, stays in AL Central

Sox Reporter

White Sox fans are still going to see plenty of Nomar Mazara.

The former South Side right fielder, who the White Sox non-tendered early in the offseason, is staying in the American League Central after signing a major league deal with the Detroit Tigers, according to multiple reports.

Mazara was a source of great frustration for White Sox fans as he spent the shortened 2020 season mired in a horrible slump, never able to flash the supposed untapped potential the team cited when it traded for him at the 2019 Winter Meetings. Prior to joining the White Sox, Mazara was a perennial 20-homer guy in four seasons with the Texas Rangers. In his lone season on the South Side, he hit just one home run, posting a career-worst .589 OPS.

The White Sox acquired Mazara, who has still yet to reach his 26th birthday, with two years of control remaining but opted to end that experiment this offseason with sights set on a championship run in 2021. They replaced Mazara in right field with Adam Eaton, who since leaving the South Side in a 2016 trade won a World Series ring with the Washington Nationals, providing a more dependable option than Mazara, from a production standpoint, with the expectations what they are.

Of course, the Tigers are the perfect kind of rebuilding team to take a chance on Mazara and hope that he can live up to the potential he had when he was a top prospect years ago. White Sox pitchers were thrice on the receiving end of Mazara home runs during the 2019 season, and in his four years in Texas, Mazara feasted on the South Siders, hitting six home runs and owning a career 1.016 OPS against them.

Now they'll have to face him regularly as a division rival.
