Introducing the White Sox stat mailbag

Share

Earlier this week, I put out a tweet asking for White Sox stat questions for an upcoming mailbag. Thanks to those who sent in questions. Here is said mailbag:

@kylecharlier asks: Put together your best statistical argument for Baines in the HOF

I did put together an argument for Baines (along with Albert Belle) when the Today's Game Era Ballot was announced in early November. You can find that here.

One thing I would add to the argument is his excellence as a designated hitter. He was one of the best of his era at the position.

@lpmcmanus asks: Nolan Ryan gave up an average of 14 home runs per 162 games. @OzzieGuillen and Craig Grebeck went back to back off of him in 1990. Both combined for 47 homers over 28 years. Is this the most unlikely combinations in history?

If there's a more unlikely back-to-back home run combination, I'd like to see it. This is one of my favorite pieces of trivia. That was Craig Grebeck's first career MLB home run. And for both batters, it was their only home run of 1990.

@jrubel24 asks: Who has the most pitcher walks in White Sox history?

Whether you're asking for the White Sox pitcher who issued the most walks in White Sox history, or the White Sox pitcher (whose primary position was a pitcher) who himself walked the most at the plate, the answer is the same.

Red Faber walked 1,213 batters and himself walked 169 times.

@wmcmillan68 asks: Who are the Sox all-time leaders in each category while playing in shorts?

The Sox played three games in shorts in 1976. August 8 (game 1 of a doubleheader), August 21 and August 22 (Game 1 of a doubleheader). Here are the statistical leaders:

Hits: 4; Jim Essian and Jorge Orta (both had hits in all three shorts games)

Runs: 3; Jerry Hairston

Home runs: 1; Jack Brohamer (the only one)

RBI: 5; Jack Brohamer

Stolen bases: 2; Pat Kelly and Jim Essian (the Sox as a team were 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts wearing shorts)

Games (pitching): 3; Terry Forster (only pitcher to appear in all three games)

Innings: 8.1; Terry Forster and Ken Kravec

Strikeouts: 6; Terry Forster

Wins: 1; Terry Forster and Dave Hamilton

Losses: 1; Ken Kravec

Saves: 1; Goose Gossage

@rkohler asks: Who has hit the most full count homers in White Sox history

Pitch count data is available back to 1988 (mostly complete, but not fully), so I will use the data that we have available.

The most full count homers in White Sox history according to the data available is 47 by Frank Thomas. Count data is missing for 10 of his home runs, so he may have a few more than that. Paul Konerko had 46, and count data is known for every one of his home runs.  Because Thomas and Konerko are far and away one and two in home runs in White Sox history, this is almost certainly the 1-2 all-time in full count home runs in White Sox history.

@chisox2727 asks: can you start a campaign to get Luke Appling a statue? #AskKamka

Appling is definitely worthy of a statue. That might be something to consider in the future. The first two things on the agenda, however, are getting Minnie Miñoso and Dick Allen into the Hall of Fame.
