March to White Sox Opening Day: Jose Abreu

Share

A lot of new faces have joined the White Sox this offseason and the team is expected to make its return to contention. However, the face of the team hasn’t changed.

Jose Abreu, who entered the offseason saying he would sign himself to a new contract with the White Sox, is one of the team’s most proven commodities and a teammate who other players look up to. Now, the 33-year-old enters 2020 with high expectations for his team as well as himself.

Abreu, who inked a three-year, $50 million contract with the White Sox in November, is the second-longest tenured player on the team. He has been with the team since 2014 and has yet to see an 80-win season on the South Side. Last year’s third-place finish in the AL Central was the highest finish Abreu has ever been a part of.

Despite the losing seasons, Abreu is a three-time All-Star with 179 career home runs and a career OPS of .862. Will his production increase with more support in the lineup?

The White Sox have plenty of young talent heading into 2020. Six of the projected starters in the lineup are 26 years old or younger. Three in the projected starting rotation fit that bill, too, and that doesn’t even include the inevitable addition of Michael Kopech.

Abreu’s experience and leadership will be key for the White Sox as they enter a new era. That’s why he is kicking off our March to Opening Day series. Watch the video above for more on Abreu.
