NBC Sports Chicago is simulating the 2020 White Sox season via MLB The Show during the postponement of play. The White Sox, stocked with young talent and veteran offseason acquisitions, were expected to take a big step forward in their rebuild this season. Follow along as we play out the first few months of the season.
The White Sox would like a mulligan for the opener vs. the Royals. Since baseball doesn’t allow for such requests, the best the South Siders can do is wipe this game from memory.
Gio Gonzalez was on the bump for Chicago on Monday evening. However, his time there would be limited. Struggling with command, walks would damage Gonzalez in a major way.
After a two-out walk to Ryan O’Hearn in the second, Maikel Franco hit an opposite field home run to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Gonzalez walked three straight batters to load the bases. Once again, Franco made him pay, launching another ball the opposite way, this time for a grand slam. Gonzalez left before completing four innings, trailing 7-0.
Meanwhile, it was wasted opportunity after wasted opportunity for the White Sox hitters. Chicago had multiple runners on-base in five of their nine frames, yet went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and failed to score a single run.
The Royals won the first game of the series in dominant fashion, 8-0.
