Duffey, Baldelli suspended for throwing behind Mercedes

Tony La Russa may not have been able to determine Tyler Duffey’s intentions when he threw behind Yermín Mercedes in the second game of the latest White Sox-Twins series, but MLB has made up its mind, announcing a three-game suspension for the Minnesota reliever.

In addition, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli received a one-game suspension. Both Baldelli and Duffey were fined as well.

Baldelli will serve his suspension in the second game of the Twins double-header against the Angels on Friday. Meanwhile Duffey is appealing his suspension.

The beef between the Twins and Mercedes started when Mercedes launched a 3-0 pitch into the stands for a home run. The White Sox were already winning 15-4 at the time, but a position player was pitching, so the at-bat sparked a fierce debate about the unwritten rules of baseball.

After Duffey threw behind Mercedes, and was ejected from the game, tensions did not escalate further between the two teams.

The White Sox play the Twins next on June 28.
