La Russa revealed Wednesday night that Andrew Vaughn would not make his major league debut as a starter in the opener, slated to get a starting nod in Friday's game. Collins, who had a hot spring and hadn't played since Sunday's Cactus League contest, opened the season at DH. García was the first man out of the chute to sub in for the injured Eloy Jiménez in left field.

La Russa forecasted planned positions for certain players during the spring. Anderson seems locked in as the team's leadoff man, with Abreu similarly locked into the No. 3 spot. Moncada was used an awful lot as the cleanup hitter, and it would be no surprise, especially now with Jiménez on the shelf, to see him bat there often. Madrigal, too, seemed destined for the ninth spot in the order.

But the manager made it known that most of the other spots could be shuffled, particularly the No. 2 spot behind Anderson, and it's possible we'll see a host of different batters there early in the season and even throughout the campaign.
