Lucas Giolito shares details on ‘freak,' ‘weird' injury

More bad injury news for the White Sox. Tony La Russa said on Saturday that Lucas Giolito is headed to the IL with an abdominal strain and is expected to miss at least a couple of starts.

“What we don’t want to do is do some pushing early, in this part of the season, and lose guys because they pitch when they shouldn’t pitch,” La Russa said. “You lose the game, you don’t lose the pitcher.”

That will be important for the Sox, who are already missing Lance Lynn and several relievers.

Giolito shed more light on his strain, calling it a “freak” and “weird” injury that doesn’t affect pitchers very often.

“We get stuff like that, little aches and pains while we’re throwing, that you just kind of disregard,” Giolito said. “So I immediately disregarded it. But the next pitch, same. Next pitch, same. It just didn’t want to go away, so I just had to go and say something.”

If there’s any reason for optimism, it’s that Giolito said his abdomen isn’t sore, and he doesn’t feel the pain when moving around normally. Additionally, Giolito said he’s planning on continuing to work his arm throughout the treatment for his injury.

“I’m going to try to keep my arm moving as much as possible so that when I do come back, whenever that may be, hopefully sooner rather than later, I don’t need to have this whole build up type of thing. I think that’s very possible to do.”

La Russa announced Vince Velasquez will start the White Sox home opener, but beyond that declined to delve much further into his plans for the rotation. For now, the White Sox will try to get through the next two games. They’ll worry about next week, next week.
