Abreu accidentally hit by umpire's bat toss, stays in game

José Abreu has already experienced a scary, fluky injury this season, knocked out of a doubleheader when he collided with a base runner while trying to catch a pop up along the first-base line.

Well, this was even flukier.

With the Chicago White Sox rallying in the first inning Wednesday night, Abreu was briefly banged up on a play he wasn't even a part of.

Yoán Moncada singled with Jake Lamb on second base. Lamb came around to try to score, and there was a play at the plate on the throw home from the outfield. With home-plate umpire Erich Bacchus clearing the way for the approaching Lamb, he tossed Moncada's bat out of the way.

Coincidentally, Abreu was running from his spot in the on-deck circle to behind home plate to coach Lamb and tell him to slide. But Abreu never got to do any of that, as he was hit in the leg by the tossed bat.

Abreu went down to the ground and required a visit from the trainer. But unsurprisingly — considering he wanted back in after that scary collision against the Kansas City Royals — Abreu took his at-bat, nearly lacing an RBI hit to left field, something that was only prevented by a leaping Joe Panik at third base.

Abreu took his time in the White Sox dugout but came out to play first base in the following inning.

Again, unsurprising stuff from the MVP, but the kind of thing that makes him the leader in the White Sox clubhouse.
