The White Sox will be without their MVP for this week's series against the division-rival Minnesota Twins.
The team announced Monday afternoon that Abreu suffered an ankle injury when he slid into home plate to score the game-winning run Sunday against the Kansas City Royals. X-rays were negative, but an MRI revealed inflammation. He is expected to return to the lineup for the White Sox next series, a three-game weekend set against the New York Yankees.
It's the after-the-fact capper to an unbelievably eventful weekend for Abreu.

Friday, he was involved in a scary collision that cut and bruised his face and bruised his knee. He needed assistance leaving the field and was knocked out of the game.
A day later, however, with no concussion and getting the all-clear from the training staff, he returned to the lineup, playing and homering in Saturday night's game.
Then came Sunday, with the still bandaged Abreu racing home from third on a wild pitch and narrowly sliding in safely to score the game-winning run in a walk-off win.

Abreu inspired his teammates and set off another round of adulation for one of the franchise's all-time greats as he toughed his way through that nasty-looking collision. But apparently adding an ankle injury on top of that was too much, even for someone as dedicated to putting his body on the line as he.
Knowing Abreu's opinion on off days — he loathes them, citing how they make his mom mad — he's likely not pleased he won't be out there with his teammates this week against the rival Twins.
But Abreu's top priority is winning the World Series, and certainly three days off in May will have him healthier and better able to contribute for the remainder of baseball's seven-month marathon to the Fall Classic.
