Seby Zavala hits grand slam for second homer of game

Seby Zavala's latest stint in the majors is going pretty well.

He's received rave reviews as a defender and a game-caller behind home plate. But Zavala wasn't brought up for his offensive prowess in the wake of the injury to Yasmani Grandal.

But the Chicago White Sox got to see his bat in action Saturday night, all right.

In his first trip to the plate, Zavala launched the first homer of his big league career to dead center.

But the follow-up was more impressive, a grand slam that went soaring into the evening sky and over the left-field fence to put the White Sox in front of the Cleveland Indians by a 6-1 score.

The salami even earned Zavala a curtain call, a pretty full house at Guaranteed Rate Field breaking out into a "SEBY! SEBY! SEBY!" chant.

If you predicted that would happen at any point this season, you better head to Las Vegas right now.

Zavala came into Saturday's game hitting .143 on the season. But he keeps getting starts behind the plate thanks to his work with White Sox pitchers, who have all praised the job he's done filling in for Grandal.

That work alone might be enough to keep him around once Grandal returns from his injury. If Zavala can add some offense to it, then fans who were hoping for a backup catcher addition at the trade deadline might just get their wish in the form of a guy who was already here.
