KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Tony La Russa isn’t letting Yoán Moncada’s hitting streak end so easily. The White Sox manager wants MLB to review the call on Moncada’s sharply hit groundball in the sixth inning of a 6-0 loss to the Royals on Sunday.
“When I was working for MLB, you could appeal it,” La Russa said after the game. “I mean, he hit the ball sharply, and it handcuffed the infielder. That’s a base hit. So, we’re going to do everything we can to have it reviewed.”
Moncada was on a career-high 17-game hitting streak entering play Sunday. He went 0-for-4, reaching base on an error. The ball rocketed off his bat at 107.3 mph, sneaking under Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield’s glove.

“Merrifield is a talented infielder, tried to get a glove on it and got handcuffed,” La Russa said. “It’s a base hit. Yesterday our guy at third base backed up a little bit, and they have him a base hit for it, so it’s home cooking.”
After a slight pause, La Russa backed off his accusation a bit.
“Maybe,” he continued. “But the run didn’t score, no reason that ball should remain an error.”
