The White Sox have yet to make their final decisions on which players will be called up when major league rosters expand Sunday.
Additionally, any potential call-ups might not be up until decently after the rosters expand on Sept. 1, considering the Triple-A Charlotte Knights are in the thick of a playoff race and might be playing postseason baseball that White Sox brass has said could be beneficial to young players.
The White Sox said Thursday that decisions on call-ups will be made once Charlotte’s season comes to an end.
“There is still much that these guys are learning down there,” general manager Rick Hahn said last week. “Even being in the pennant race alone, even what they're doing on a nightly basis, the battle to try to get into the postseason, is a benefit to them. Eventually you balance that about what they're going to benefit from Chicago versus going through that and make a decision.”
As of Thursday, the Knights were atop the wild-card standings in the International League, though they led by just a game with three games left to play in the regular season. The Knights travel to Norfolk for their final trio of contests this weekend, with the regular season coming to an end Sunday, the same day rosters expand at the big league level.
Of course, the main interest in this batch of call-ups is whether Luis Robert, the organization’s top-ranked prospect, will be included. Robert has been perhaps the best hitter in all the minor leagues this season and just smacked his 31st home run of the 2019 campaign — during which he’s played at three different levels — Wednesday.
But, per the team, the decision on Robert or any other player has yet to be made and won’t be finalized until after the Knights are done playing this season.
"He's doing fantastic," Hahn said of Robert. "Obviously you've seen the numbers. There are certainly some elements of his game that they're still fine tuning, they're still working on. But he's obviously an extremely talented young man and one that we're very excited to have here for the next several years.
"We have made no decisions on the ultimate call-up list or the ultimate timing of the call-up list."
