Yoan Moncada out for second straight game as he's still being bothered by back soreness

Yoan Moncada's back is still bothering him, and it will likely keep him out for at least the first two games of the White Sox series with the visiting New York Yankees this weekend.

Moncada was removed from Monday night's game against the Washington Nationals with what was described at the time as back spasms. He was out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals, as manager Rick Renteria updated the verbiage to a strain. After Wednesday's off day, Moncada was missing from the White Sox lineup in the series opener against the Yankees on Thursday night.

The third baseman said Thursday that he's still experiencing soreness and that he hopes to return to the lineup Saturday or Sunday.

"A little better, much better than the first day, but I still feel a soreness," he said through team interpreter Billy Russo. "I want to be sure that when I come back I am 100-percent healthy because I don't want to have any lingering issues going forward."

"The player knows where he’s at, so we’ll continue to address it day to day," Renteria said. "He’s doing a lot of the different activities he’s capable of doing. We’ll see when he’s actually ready to go and make a decision then."

Moncada's absence, however long, comes as he's swinging a hot stick. In his last 17 games, Moncada slashed .338/.373/.507 with three doubles, three homers, seven runs scored and 10 RBIs.
