Yolmer Sanchez featured in one of the weirdest at-bats in baseball history and then had some fun in the rain

The White Sox endured a long rain delay (2 hours, 55 minutes) and only got to play for five more minutes before rain came down hard again, forcing another delay and eventually a suspension of play.

Despite the frustrating, start and stop nature of the delay, Yolmer Sanchez still provided some entertainment.

Sanchez was stuck in the middle of the first delay, with his plate appearance in the fifth inning getting interrupted with a 2-1 count. Sanchez, a switch hitter, had a 2-1 count against starting pitcher Homer Bailey when the first delay hit. Sanchez batted left-handed against the right-handed Bailey.

After the nearly three-hour delay, reliever Brian Flynn came in to pitch to Sanchez. With Flynn being a lefty, Sanchez switched to hit right-handed. Flynn’s first pitch was in the dirt and then Sanchez delivered an RBI single to tie the game.

So Sanchez had a plate appearance span three hours that featured two pitchers, included him batting from both sides of the plate and resulted in a game-tying RBI.

That would be enough for one of the stranger plate appearances in baseball history, but then Sanchez added to his list of goofy antics.

Sanchez slid into second on a wild pitch later in the inning. Immediately after that, the downpour forced the second rain delay.

Sanchez couldn’t simply run into the White Sox dugout. He had to make a scene. He slid face first near third base and made a swimming motion on the infield dirt/mud.

He wasn’t done yet. Once in the dugout, Sanchez went to a signature move. He opened up an ice bucket and dumped it on his head. Why not? This was already the second time he had been soaked. Might as well dump even more water on yourself, right?

After the rain stopped and the tarp was taken off after the second delay, play was still suspended. The game will resume at 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader.
