Texas lands commitment from four-star recruit

Shaka Smart

Shaka Smart

On today’s podcast, we discussed the importance of Saturday’s win over then-No. 3 North Carolina for Shaka Smart and the Texas basketball program.

On Monday, you saw why.

Andrew Jones, a four-star guard from the Dallas-area, committed to Smart and the Longhorns, becoming the third member of Smart’s first full recruiting class alongside four star guard Jacob Young and four-star big man James Banks; Smart’s 2015 class included two kids that committed to Rick Barnes (Eric Davis and Kerwin Roach) and Tevin Mack, who committed to Smart at VCU.

Jones was on his official visit on Saturday. He was behind the bench when Javan Felix hit that buzzer-beater.

That matters.

“It was amazing,” Jones told of the atmosphere. “The student section was crazy and so were the fans. When I arrived, they knew who I was and then after the game, they were all yelling ‘Andrew’.”

Smart missed out on Marques Bolden, but he does currently have two Texas high school hoopers committed to play for the Longhorns. Roach is also from Texas, and the Longhorns are still in the hunt for five-star prospect Jarrett Allen.

The key for Smart was to make it cool for kids from Texas to don the Burnt Orange again, and he’s well on his way towards doing that.
