Barry Hinson to take over at Southern Illinois

According to Jeff Goodman of, Southern Illinois has hired former Missouri State head coach Barry Hinson.

Hinson was the head coach in Springfield, MO, from 1999-2008, finishing with eight winning seasons and four NIT appearance. But what Hinson is probably best known for is that he never made the NCAA tournament while heading up the Bears. He did, however, coach the team that finished with the highest RPI to be left out of the Big Dance, when Missouri State was rated 21st in 2006 and relegated to the NIT. He has three teams on the top ten of that list.

The decision to hire Hinson, who had been the Director of Basketball Operations at Kansas for the last two years, came hours after Bruce Weber, who had been the head coach of the Salukis before he took over at Illinois, turned down the offer.

Hinson replaces Chris Lowery, who was fired earlier this month.
