Belmont and Lipscomb will meet twice in 2012-13

On a day that a rivalry that picked up considerable momentum with its two meetings in 2011-12 came to a temporary end, one of college hoops’ most underrated rivalries got it right.

Belmont and Lipscomb, who are no longer conference foes with the Bruins moving to the OVC, will meet twice during the 2012-13 season.

“The Battle of the Boulevard” has been played 130 times since 1953, with their last 19 meetings coming as Atlantic Sun members.

A rivalry like this is too good to allow conference realignment to diminish it, and luckily both administrations realized this.

“It is good thing for both teams and for both universities to continue playing,” Lipscomb Coach Scott Sanderson said in a statement released by the school. “There is so much attention put on both of those games every year.

“The biggest difference is the games will be played in November and December instead of January and February.

“We will play the first game of the season here at Allen Arena. It will be a great atmosphere for both programs and both programs will benefit from it.”

Lipscomb hosts the first meeting on November 9, with the return match being played on December 4. These will be their first non-conference meetings as Division I members.

The biggest difference is the timing of the games as Sanderson noted, but that’s a concession that had to be made with them being in different leagues.

And if it’s between early meetings and not playing at all, both programs would gladly take the former.
