BYU loses starting forward for ‘at least two weeks’ due to a torn hamstring

After starting the first nine games of the season for BYU, senior forward Nate Austin was unable to help the Cougars in Wednesday’s 65-61 home loss to No. 13 Utah after injuring his right hamstring in pregame warmups.

Thursday evening head coach Dave Rose revealed the severity of the injury, as it’s a torn hamstring that is expected to sideline Austin for “at least two weeks.” The 6-foot-11 Austin is averaging 3.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, with the latter figure being second-best on the team behind Kyle Collinsworth (7.1 rpg).

This news means that BYU will be without its most experienced front court player for the time being. The Cougars have games against Weber State, Stanford and UMass to play before they begin WCC play at home against No. 9 Gonzaga on December 27. Players such as freshmen Isaac Nielson and Corbin Kaufusi should see more minutes as a result of Austin’s injury, and the BYU guards will need to continue to rebound as well.

Three of BYU’s top four rebounders are perimeter players: Collinsworth, Tyler Haws (4.3 rpg) and Anson Winder (4.2 rpg).
