Dominic Cheek’s NBA considerations nothing new

Mike Miller

If Villanova guard Dominic Cheek does turn pro, it won’t be a surprise. That’s a move that’s been in the works some time. has posted multiple items in the last week regarding Cheek’s NBA aspirations. The site noted that those rumors occasionally don’t come to fruition (Read: Mo Sutton), but it could happen with Cheek despite a less-than-impressive junior season.

The 6-5 wing was Villanova’s second-leading scorer during the 2011-12 season (12.5 ppg), but was a volume shooter who didn’t shoot well from inside the arc (39 percent) or beyond it (32 percent). His defense wasn’t impressive either.

“What’s going through his head?” an NBA scout told “I mean, it’s crazy. What has he done that makes him think he can go into the draft?

“It doesn’t make any sense. He was higher-rated coming out of high school than he is now.”

Coach Jay Wright says Cheek is still assessing everything.

“There’s a lot of extenuating circumstances that I can’t go in to,” Jay Wright said last week. “I can see on one side where it might not be a good idea. But there are other circumstances for him that would make it a good idea. We’re really trying to work through that right now.”
