Head coach John Groce receives contract extension from Illinois

John Groce

Illinois has given head coach John Groce a contract extension through the 2018-2019 season, the school announced on Thursday. Groce will be getting a raise as well, with his annual salary getting bumped up to $1.7 million per season.

“John Groce has done an excellent job in his first two years as Illinois basketball coach, so we are pleased to extend his contract and continue our commitment to him and this program in its pursuit of championships.” Director of Athletics Mike Thomas said. “The future is bright for Fighting Illini basketball under Coach Groce’s leadership.”

“We remain excited about the future of Illinois basketball,” Groce said. “So much of the credit goes to the young men in our program who believe in our vision and are working to achieve the high standards we set in all areas both on the court and in the classroom.”

Groce has gone 43-28 in his two seasons in Champaign. He made the Round of 32 of the NCAA tournament in his first year, going 20-15 and getting into the NIT this past season. He is 15-21 overall in Big Ten play and has yet to finish in the top half of the conference.
