Indiana AD backs Tom Crean again, but says Hoosiers ‘not where we want to be’

Tom Crean

The coaching carousel is in motion, but it doesn’t appear to be making a stop in Bloomington, Indiana. At least not this spring.

On Friday evening, Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star published an exclusive interview with Indiana athletic director Fred Glass. For the second time this month, Glass offered backed Tom Crean. Earlier this month, following a loss to Iowa, Glass told ESPN, “I’m bullish on Tom.”

Three additional losses, including a season-ending one to Wichita State in the Round of 64, haven’t changed Glass’ opinion on Crean.

“Because I believe in the team he has assembled and is assembling, his leadership of it and their ability to start achieving our program goals, I continue to support Tom Crean as our coach,” he told the Star.

But Glass added, “while from a team perspective, there were certainly some positives this year, from a program perspective, we are not where we want to be.”

It’s worth noting that Crean’s buyout -- through July 1 -- would be $12 million. It’s a $7.5 million buyout after that date. Although, Glass claimed that is not a reason why Crean is still the school’s coach.

In seven seasons, Crean has compiled a 121-111 record with three NCAA tournament appearances, reaching the Sweet 16 twice.
