Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm completes coaching staff

When Steve Prohm was announced as the new head coach at Iowa State, a major question was who would be the assistants on his coaching staff. With T.J. Otzelberger and Cornell Mann being members of the staff under Fred Hoiberg, their respective statuses were up in the air due to the coaching change. Monday morning Prohm officially announced his staff for the upcoming season, and only one of those two will be back in Ames.

Otzelberger, who interviewed for the head coaching position, will remain on the Iowa State staff with Loyola (IL) staffer and former Iowa State assistant Daniyal Robinson and former Murray State assistant William Small being the two other assistant coaches. Small makes the move from Murray State with Prohm, with Robinson being an assistant on Greg McDermott’s staff at Iowa State from 2008-10.

“I am excited about the staff that I’ve been able to assemble,” Prohm said in the release. “This was a unique situation because Fred (Hoiberg) went to the NBA and I wanted to be very respectful to everybody involved in the process. “I thought that because of the success of the program it would be important to have some continuity.

“I also wanted some people around me that I’ve known for a while, to recruit the South, which is an area that has been very good to us. I also wanted to add some people with strong junior college and Midwest ties. It was important to me to have coaches with good character that are going to do things the right way on and off the court.”

Those moves mean that Mann, who has deep connections within the State of Michigan and was a key factor in landing point guard Monte’ Morris, will not be retained. And in regards to recruiting for the Class of 2016, Iowa State was involved with two talented Michigan natives in Miles Bridges and Tyler Cook. The question now is just how much of an impact the departure of Mann has on their respective recruitments.
