Three-star point guard to announce college choice Friday afternoon

2014 Nike EYBL. Session #2. Dallas.

Another Class of 2015 prospect will be choosing a college this week, as Minneapolis-based point guard Jarvis Johnson will reveal his choice Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Regarded as a three-star prospect by, the 6-foot-1 Johnson attends DeLaSalle HS in Minneapolis and helped lead the team to a Minnesota Class 3A state title this past spring.

Five schools remain in the running for Johnson’s services: Baylor, Minnesota, UNLV, Wichita State and Wisconsin. Of those schools Minnesota was the only one to host Johnson on an official visit, and in the eyes of multiple media outlets Richard Pitino’s program is the favorite to receive the point guard’s commitment.

The Minneapolis native took an official visit to the university last weekend — his only official visit. He dined with players and coaches, but the highlight for Johnson might have been attending the Minnesota-Middle Tennessee State football game.

“As soon as I walked out of the tunnel, they just started chanting my name,” he said earlier this week. “It was cool to see though. I really enjoyed that part a lot. It was kind of a surprise moment, but it kind of just made me laugh a little bit.”

Minnesota loses two guards at the end of the 2014-15 season in starters Dre Mathieu and Andre Hollins, which would make a commitment from Johnson an important step forward for the program. The Golden Gophers have already received a verbal commitment from two guards in the 2015 class, with point guard Kevin Dorsey and shooting guard Dupree McBrayer being those players.

Thus far Minnesota has three commitments in 2015, with center Jonathan Nwankwo being the other.
