With two of their top three scorers (Ashton Gibbs and Nasir Robinson) from last season’s 22-17 team graduating, Pittsburgh needed an infusion of scoring ability if they were to improve on their 5-13 Big East record.

Central Michigan transfer Trey Zeigler is capable of providing such a spark, and both he and Pitt received the good news on Friday that his eligibility waiver request was granted.

As a result Zeigler, who left CMU after his father Ernie was fired by the school, will be eligible to play immediately.

Pairing him up with a healthy Tray Woodall in the back court should make Jamie Dixon’s team better offensively in 2012-13.

Zeigler led CMU last season with averages of 15.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per per game, with the Chippewas winning just 11 games on the year.

Pittsburgh will also welcome center Steven Adams (a 7-footer expected by many to have an impact, especially defensively), wing Chris Jones and point guard James Robinson.
