St. John’s lands top-50 2016 guard Shamorie Ponds
St. John’s opened its 2016 recruiting efforts by landing its No. 1 target as Brooklyn guard Shamorie Ponds pledged to the Red Storm during a Tuesday press conference.
New head coach Chris Mullin has a scoring guard in Ponds who can go out and get buckets. The 6-foot-0 Ponds is regarded as a four-star prospect and the No. 42 overall prospect in the Class of 2016.
In 22 games with the New York Lightning in the Nike EYBL this spring and summer, Ponds averaged 16.1 points per game on 42 percent shooting. Ponds also averaged 3.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.5 steals per game. The Red Storm are landing a potential impact scorer and coupled with 2015 guard recruits like Marcus LoVett and Malik Ellison, St. John’s could find some talent among that group that sticks.
Now Mullin and his staff will continue to pursue other targets, including five-star New York native Rawle Alkins but Ponds is a very positive start.
