That Big 12 scoring record? It’s a Dunn deal

LaceDarius Dunn’s combines a gunner’s instinct with a superb shot. No wonder he’s about to become the Big 12’s career scoring leader.

But lately it’s been a slog for the 6-4 Baylor guard.

As he nears Andre Emmett’s conference mark, the senior’s only averaged 16.5 points in his last four games, down four points from his average. But the Bears (18-10, 7-7) need him to carry the scoring load. Thus, his 16 shot attempts in Saturday’s win over Texas A&M.

“I think I did a great job of staying within my game, and kept taking shots,” Dunn told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “My teammates told me to keep shooting, and I just felt it [on the second-half 3s]. They were big shots, and fortunately I knocked them down.”

If he knocks a few more jumpers tonight against Oklahoma State, he’ll finally pass Texas Tech’s Emmett, who ended his career with 2,256 points. Dunn just needs 12.

It’s hardly been a dream season for Dunn, though.

He began the season with a nasty off-court incident. His scoring average is steady, but he’s shooting’s down from last season – and he’s jacking up more shots. Worst of all, the Bears are fighting for their NCAA tournament livelihood.

And unless Dunn shoots them to a few Big 12 tournament victories, his Baylor career’s not going to end in the Big Dance, but in the NIT.

But one thing’s for sure. He’ll keep shooting.
