Tom Izzo on NCAA transfers: ‘If we don’t do something, we’re stupid’

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has never been a fan of the amount of transfers in college basketball, and he doubled-down on that sentiment when talking to the press at a charity event over the weekend.

“If we don’t do something in the NCAA, we’re stupid, to use a bad word,” Izzo said, according to the Detroit Free-Press. “That’s how, I think if you ask any one of these guys, I don’t know who would say it publicly, but it’s just getting to be a shame. Are we teaching kids anything to fight through? But because of that, you’re always recruiting. And we may fill the spot, we may not.”

Izzo has had some success with transfers in recent years. Next year’s roster will include a pair of transfers -- Eron Harris from West Virginia and Bryn Forbes, who was on the roster last season -- and he is also looking to add another piece this season. With five-star big man Caleb Swanigan decommitting earlier this spring, Michigan State is looking at potentially adding another front court piece as well.
