Vanderbilt expected to hire Bryce Drew

Vanderbilt is expected to name Bryce Drew as their next head coach. reported earlier that a deal should be in place within the next two days.

Drew has long been considered one of the best young coaching prospects, as he helped build Valparaiso into a power in the Horizon League. They’ve won four of the last five regular season conference titles and, in 2013 and 2015, reached the NCAA tournament via the Horizon League tournament title.

Drew, who is 41 years old, has had other offers to coach high major programs, but the timing and circumstance was right for him to leave. Valpo is losing a talented senior class while Vandy is a private school with rich donors, a decent basketball pedigree and membership in a league where there is no second-best program behind Kentucky.

One thing to keep an eye on: Alec Peters, a junior at Valpo who averaged better than 18 points and eight boards this season, may be able to graduate early.

Drew, whose brother Scott coaches at Baylor, is best known for this buzzer-beater that he made when he was playing for Valpo. He was also the 16th pick of the 1998 NBA Draft.
