Arrested Cyclone DE won’t play in Sooners game

An off-field incident has cost Iowa State a starting member of its defense for its game today against Oklahoma.

A school official confirmed to the Ames Tribune that defensive end David Irving did not travel with the team to Norman Friday. As a result, obviously, Irving will not play in the Big 12 matchup.

Irving was arrested very early Thursday morning and charged with domestic assault with injury and simple assault. While the junior did not make the trip, the Cyclones have declined to label his absence as a suspension.

This will mark the second straight game ISU will be without the end as Irving did not play in last Saturday’s loss to TCU due to what the Tribune said head coach Paul Rhodes described as “a non-football related health concern.” Prior to that, Irving had started the first eight games of the season.

This season, Irving has 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
