The top five teams in the USA Today coaches’ poll remain the same as they were following opening weekend, but there was plenty of change and tumult underneath them.
Perhaps most strikingly was the fact that a whopping five new teams have been added to the ranks of the... ummm... ranked.
Stanford (No. 19), Michigan (No. 22), Houston (No. 23), Cal (No. 24) and Missouri (No. 25) all made their first appearances of the young season in the poll.
Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech were the biggest losers -- both literally and figuratively -- as they tumbled from No. 13 and No. 17, respectively, to completely fall out of the rankings. Florida State (then-No. 18), Georgia (No. 19) and BYU (No. 24) were the other schools to find themselves unranked.
Of the schools still ranked, Penn State fell the furthest, going from No. 14 to No. 20. Miami nearly matched that by going from No. 12 to No. 17.
South Carolina made the biggest jump, going from No. 25 to No. 16 following their big conference win over UGA. Utah and Auburn were tied at No. 20 last week, and both took a big jump this week; the Utes to No. 14, the Tigers to No. 15.
At the top of the poll, Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State, Texas and TCU are still 1-5. The Broncos did see their deficit to the Buckeyes increase from 93 to 133 points, while the Longhorns closed the gap from 40 to to just 16.
Following their second-straight blowout win, Oregon moved from No. 8 to No. 6, while Florida and Nebraska dropped a spot to No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Oklahoma and Iowa flipped positions from a week ago, with the Sooners coming in at No. 9 and the Hawkeyes at No. 10.
