When it comes to the race for the 2010 Heisman, you wouldn’t get much of an argument from too many people that Auburn’s Cam Newton will lug the label of frontrunner into the final third of his season.
Of course, and as could be best exemplified by Denard Robinson circa September ’10, a lot of things can change over the course of a month. One thing that won’t change, apparently, is the ballot of at least one of the Heisman voter.
Exactly 25 years ago this year, Bo Jackson was running over, through, around, over, through and then back over defenders on his way to the 1985 Heisman trophy. As a past winner, Jackson will have a vote for the 2010 trophy. As an Auburn alum, there’s little doubt where that vote is going.
“I’ve looked for a chance for the past 25 years, and it never happened,” Jackson told Chris Low of ESPN.com‘s SEC blog. “So I don’t have to tell you who I’m voting for this year. I’ve already got the ballot marked ... with an exclamation point. ...
“When he’s out on the field, it’s almost like he’s a man amongst boys. He’s patient. He knows what he’s doing, and he’s having fun doing it. That’s the thing about it. Everybody is having fun. Look at those stands. We haven’t seen that in a long time at Auburn.”
While his giddiness over the recent developments on The Plains is understandable, hopefully Jackson -- and other voters as well -- will keep a sliver of an open mind when it comes to the final five weeks of the season. You just never know when Superman will trip over some kryptonite strategically placed by a defensive coordinator or two.
