Brian Kelly has an Irish first -- a transfer

Cornerback Spencer Boyd -- a member of Notre Dame’s 2010 recruiting class -- was an early enrollee who unfortunately fell behind academically and will now transfer out after just a few months at the South Bend school, the South Bend Tribune reports.

Before he will be allowed to transfer, however, Boyd will have to catch up academically during the early summer semester -- which the school will pay for. After that, he’s free and clear to pursue another football home.

The defensive back will likely end up at South Florida, both the Tribune and Greg Auman of the St. Petersburg Times are reporting.

As far as the parting of ways is concerned, it seemed to be a very amicable split, more than likely because Boyd -- the father of a two-year-old son and a Coral, Fla., native -- was having “family issues” and wanted to be closer to home.

“He’s been a good kid,” head coach Brian Kelly said. “He’s done the right things. He’s worked hard. He fell behind academically and had a lot of personal things going on in his life. Unfortunately, all of the things tipped the scale enough to make it difficult for him to stay in South Bend.”
