BYU to fulfill Mississippi State’s SEC power conference requirement in 2016, 2017

Surely by pure coincidence, Mississippi State and BYU have reportedly agreed to a home-and-home series to be played in 2016 and 2017. Ironically, the news comes just after learning the SEC will allow games scheduled against BYU to count toward the conference’s power conference scheduling requirement, which just so happens to go into action starting in 2016.

Mississippi State’s schedule for 2016 is now booked with the addition of BYU. According to Brett McMuprhy of ESPN.com, via Twitter, BYU will host Mississippi State in 2016. Mississippi State has an opening on September 10, 2016, but the Cougars are scheduled to play in-state rival Utah that day. BYU will make the trip to Mississippi State the following season. Dates for these games have not been confirmed.

Earlier today the news broke the SEC will count games against Notre Dame, BYU and Army toward fulfilling the conference’s non-conference scheduling requirement that calls for at least one game against a school from another power five conference. Until now, only Notre Dame counted for that requirement by the SEC. The ACC recently decided to add BYU to that mix, although the ACC has not made the same decision regarding Army.
