Late last week, Oklahoma State announced that sophomore running back Herschel Sims had been dismissed from the team. Though the reason for the dismissal was vaguely explained as a “violation of unspecified team rules”, word on the Internet street was that Sims was connected to stealing $700 from the bank account of freshman linebacker Jeremiah Tshimanga.
Today, there’s more reason to suspect that is indeed the case.
Per Kelly Hines of the Tulsa World, Sims has been officially charged with two felony counts of second-degree forgery. Each count is punishable for up to seven years in prison.
Tshimanga, a freshman linebacker for the Cowboys, told police officers last week that a teammate had made withdrawals of $500 and $200 from his bank account without permission back in late April. Sims, via Sims’ high school coach, said the allegations was a misunderstanding.
“I made the mistake of getting the money myself, coach,” Steve Warren said his former player told him. “I should have let him do it and I didn’t. But we had an agreement that I was going to borrow that money from him and pay him back.”
In nine games last season, Sims finished third on the team in rushing with 248 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
